I'm an idiot!

You've been reading from my blog about the heat and the humidity right? How it's been in the triple digits by noon and so unbearable to do anything in right? Well what do I do? I decide to run up to 4 miles at 10am outside in almost 95 degree temps. At 3 1/4 miles I thought "oh boy...what have I gotten myself into?". I could feel cotton balls forming in my mouth, my body starting to hate me and my feet yelling at me with each stride. Hubby turns to me and says "let's turn around and head back" but no, I was too stubborn to listen. I wanted to get to the 3 1/2 mile mark before doing that. I didn't want to "whimp out". So at 3 1/2 miles we turn around and walk a 1/2 mile. During that time I was hot...to say the least but relieved I wasn't running anymore. With the wind at our backs now we could really feel the intensity of the sun on us. It was in full force and it was almost unbearable to be walking in, let alone running in it!

After our 1/2 mile walk/cool down, I knew at that point there was only a mile left to run, so we booked it back. I felt great. Maybe that was all I needed. I just needed to catch my breath, let my body cool down and then know at the end of this last mile was a shower. I finished....winded and hot...but I did finish strong. I stretched it out and then lift some weights. All upper body of course.

When we get home, I start feeling chilled. I could feel the goosebumps forming and the sweat on my body turning cold. Meanwhile I was shaking....like all over. It was a nervous shake; all inwardly not outwardly. It freaked me out. I got in the shower and turned up the faucet to all the way hot (did I mention it's 100 degrees out?? Yet here I was in a hot shower). The water just didn't feel hot enough so I finished showering and ran a bath hoping to submerge myself in the warmth. I just wanted the chills to go away. I soaked in it for awhile but then felt chilly again. I got out, dried off and climbed into bed under my goose down comforter. There....now I was warm. A few moments later I was then sweating ~ too hot again! ugh!

I grab some lunch and get ready to run errands, hoping the shakes would go away. We pile into the car and head to Target. The boys had some shopping to do with their birthday money. Once we walked inside Target I felt a huge wave of nausea take over. Then the dizziness started and I started to feel overwhelmed, anxious and disoriented. Not wanting to spoil the boys' fun I asked for the keys to the car and I was going to go out and sit in the car with the AC on me. While in the car I swear I was going to be sick....and then I worried: "what if I pass out and my boys see me slumped over in the car?". I called hubby from the car and asked him to hurry. Thankfully he and the boys were just finishing up.....

We started the drive back home and the whole time we were in the car I was fighting the urge to tell hubby to pull over so I could be sick. I just wanted to get home.

20 minutes later we're home again and I grab a huge glass of water and gulp it down. I continued to do this over and over again for the next hour while lying in the bed. While resting in bed, and drinking tons of water I snacked a bit too. I was so worried about seeing all this food again (if you catch my drift). I wanted to fight this so badly because it was date night (hubby has been deployed and we had child care all arranged for our night out...I didn't want to spoil THAT either!).

By 5pm I got out of bed. I felt a little "woozy" but I was definitely more human then than I was a few hours earlier.

I learned a few valuable lessons yesterday:

1) RUNNING OUTSIDE IS OPTIONAL IN 100 DEGREE TEMPS
2) don't hate the treadmill on days when you could quite easily die in the heat (and thank goodness Scott was home yesterday ~ what if he was still deployed....the thought of that scares me)
3) TAKE WATER ON YOUR RUN ~ EVEN IF IT IS ONLY A 4 MILE RUN
4) Summer time running SUCKS ~ BRING ON THE CHILL

  1. try the nuun tablets! I've been running outdoors in the crazy heat, and the electrolytes in the nuun seem to help prevent dehydration and the "chills"...i get those baaad!

  4. Oh this happened to me once when I ran in hot weather a few days before a race. I was sick for days and ended up collapsing at the 5k mark. I am glad your heat stroke was short lived.

  5. Ugh...I feel you. We're catching a break this year on the east coast, but last summer was brutal. Stay hydrated and run strong!
p.s. Hammer Endurolytes are also good!
